Day Two 8/2
Day two had us up at 530am to make the hour drive from Blaine to Anacortes to catch a 725am ferry to Orcas Island for whale watching! The ferry schedule is super confusing but I think we've finally got it down.
We made it just in time and boarded for only my second time on a boat. These are massive ferries that hold a ton of people and cars. Here's one of the ferries in the fleet.
We disembarked from the ferry and looked for the Orca Shuttle stop, only to find that it was out of service for the day. Of course, we saw it drive us right past us onto the ferry, probably for repairs on the mainland. Without our planned mode of transportation, and still needing to get to the other side of the island, we called for a cab, hoping it wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg, and the cabbie Eric (who owns the company and has been servicing the island for 12 years) picked us right up! The can not only turned out to be cheaper than the shuttle (what), but he even gave us a breakfast recommendation, dropped us off, and picked us up from breakfast to take us to our whale watching! Also turns out the shuttle service is trying everything in their power to get Eric's company off the island, including buying his website domain and selling it to an Indonesian gambling company, so they suck anyway.
Off to whale watching! We took a 3 hour tour, but didn't get much luck, as the Canadian water border is closed and that is an integral part of the search route that most companies use to find the whales.
See that whale way off in the distance?
Yeah, us either. But we had a blast on the boat anyway. Third boat, and smallest by far, I've ever been on. SeaBands and Bonnie did me good!
We hope to head to Lime Kiln Point State Park, where you can sometimes see whales from the shores/cliffs, later this week.
After whale watching, we were exhausted so we headed back to the ferry, and back home to watch some more Olympics and and get to bed early. Waking up early for Day 3!
